Kedarnath Dham is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India and a प्रमुख part of the sacred Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,385 meters in the Rudraprayag district, the temple stands majestically near the Mandakini River, surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and holds immense spiritual importance among devotees. The stone temple, believed to be originally built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, reflects ancient architectural brilliance and deep-rooted faith.
Religious and Mythological Significance
According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to absolve their sins. Shiva, avoiding them, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath. The hump of the bull appeared here and is worshipped in the temple as a Jyotirlinga. Other parts of Shiva’s body are worshipped at different locations collectively known as the Panch Kedar.
Kedarnath is considered a powerful place for spiritual cleansing, devotion, and attaining moksha (liberation).
Kedarnath Trek and Journey
Reaching Kedarnath requires determination and devotion. Pilgrims undertake a 16–18 km trek from Gaurikund to reach the temple. Helicopter services, ponies, and palanquins are also available for convenience.
