Black Peak Expedition (Kala Nag) – Ultimate Climbing Adventure from Sankri
···—

Black Peak Expedition, also known as Kala Nag Expedition, is one of the most challenging and rewarding high-altitude mountaineering experiences in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, Black Peak rises to an impressive height of 6,387 meters, making it one of the highest trekking peaks in India.

The expedition starts from the beautiful village of Sankri, which is well known as the base for many famous Himalayan treks and climbs. Surrounded by dense forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and towering snow-covered peaks, the Black Peak Expedition offers a perfect blend of adventure, technical climbing, and raw Himalayan wilderness.

Why Choose the Black Peak Expedition?

Black Peak is an ideal expedition for experienced climbers who want to step into technical mountaineering above 6,000 meters. The climb involves glacier travel, snow slopes, ice climbing, and fixed rope sections, making it a true test of endurance, skill, and mental strength.

Unlike crowded trekking peaks, Black Peak offers a remote and less commercialized environment, giving climbers a real expedition feel. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and other major Himalayan peaks.

Difficulty Level and Required Experience

The Black Peak Expedition is considered a difficult and technical climb. It is not suitable for beginners. Climbers attempting this expedition should have:
Prior experience of climbing 5,000-meter or higher peaks
Knowledge of crampon use, ice axe, rope techniques, and glacier travel
Good physical fitness and mental endurance
Completion of a Basic or Advanced Mountaineering Course is highly recommended.

Permits and Safety

The Black Peak Expedition requires official permissions, including permits from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) and forest authorities, as the peak lies inside a protected area. A Liaison Officer is mandatory for all expeditions.

Safety is a top priority on this expedition. Proper acclimatization, trained guides, high-quality equipment, and emergency protocols are essential for a successful and safe summit attempt.

Itinerary

Explore to Sankri Village

  • The journey begins in the morning from Rishikesh by road. The drive to Sankri takes approximately 8 to 10 hours, passing through Dehradun, Chabba, Purola, and Mori. Along the way, you'll see scenic mountain roads, rivers, and dense forests. Upon reaching Sankri in the evening, you'll check into a guesthouse or Homestay. There is no trekking on this day; the focus is on travel and rest to prepare your body for the following day.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 237 km

Start Trek Taluka

  • day begins with a drive from Sankri to Taluka, a journey of approximately 12 km along a rough mountain road. The trek starts from Taluka. The trail to Osla follows the Supin River and passes through forests and over wooden bridges. The trek takes approximately 3-4 hours. By evening, you will reach Osla village and spend the night in a homestay or camp.

 The Trekking Trail

  • On the third day, the trek starts from Osla to Seema in the morning. This trek follows the Supin River and passes through open meadows and forest sections. Seema is an open camping area that offers views of the Bandarpunch massif. The trek for this day is of medium difficulty, and you reach Seema by evening and stay in tents.
The Trekking Trail

  • The trek on this day is a bit long and scenic. The route from Seema to Ruinsara Tal gradually gains altitude. Ruinsara Tal is a beautiful high-altitude lake situated right below Black Peak and the Bandarpunch range. Camp is set up near the lake by evening. The effects of the altitude might be felt on this day, so it's important to walk slowly.
Altitude: 4,800 m–5,000 m

  • On the fifth day, the trek is from Ruinsara Tal to Black Peak Base Camp. This trek passes through moraine, glacier debris, and rocky terrain before reaching the Base Camp. As you ascend, the vegetation disappears, and the entire area becomes covered in snow and rocks. Upon reaching the Base Camp, tents are pitched, and the night is spent there.
Acclimatization Day

  • There is no long trekking on this day. In the morning, a short hike is conducted for acclimatization. Afterward, training is provided on ice axe, crampons, rope techniques, and glacier safety. This day is very important for allowing the body to adapt to the high altitude. The night is spent at the Base Camp.
Altitude: 5,000 m–5,500 m

  • On this day, the actual climbing begins for the first time. The climb from Base Camp to Camp I involves traversing snow and glaciers. The route consists of a snow slope with an incline of approximately 30–35 degrees. Upon reaching Camp I, tents are pitched, and the night is spent there.
Altitude: 5,500 m–6,000 m

  • The climb on this day is more technical. The snow and ice slopes become steeper, and fixed ropes are used. Camp II is a high-altitude camp where the oxygen level is quite low. Getting enough rest on this day is very important.
Summit Day 6,387 M

  • Summit day is the most difficult and longest day. The climb starts at 1-2 AM in the morning. After crossing snow ridges and exposed sections, you reach the summit of Black Peak. From the summit, there are breathtaking views of Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and the surrounding Himalayan ranges. After a short rest, the descent begins, going straight back down to Base Camp.
Descend Day

  • On this day, we descend back to Ruinsara Tal from Base Camp. As we descend, the oxygen level improves, and the body feels more relaxed. In the evening, we set up camp near Ruinsara Tal.
Drive 12 km Taluka to Sankri

  • On this day, a long trek is undertaken from Ruinsara Tal to Taluka via Seema. Upon reaching Taluka, we return to Sankri by car. This day is physically a bit tiring but mentally relaxing.
Departure Day

  • On the last day, the return journey from Sankri to Dehradun/Rishikesh is by road. With this, the Black Peak expedition comes to a successful end.
  • Departure.
