Mount Kedar Dome Expedition: Conquering a Majestic Himalayan Giant
···—

Kedar Dome is located in the Garhwal range of Himalayan peaks in Uttarakhand, alongside the Bhagirathi massif, Meru Peak, Mt. Shivling, Mt. Satopanth, and the Gangotri peaks. It lies just 2 km northeast of one of the holiest sites in India — the Kedarnath temple — and holds deep significance in Hindu mythology as the spiritual abode of Lord Shiva.

Climbing Route
Standard Route: Gangotri Bhojbasa (via Gaumukh) Tapovan Khada Patthar Base Camp I → Base Camp II Kedar Dome Summit Back Gangotri.
The northwest flank, taken during the first ascent in 1947, remains the standard route. The eastern side is a large, very difficult rock face and is rarely attempted.
Camp Structure:
There are two high camps — Base camp I at 6,200 m and Base camp II at 6,700 m. Himalayan weather is always unpredictable, and climbers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Scenic Highlights Along the Route
The trail is a stunning assortment of landscapes — from the lush forests of Chirbasa to the massive open grounds of Tapovan, onto the glacial terrain of Kirti Glacier, before hitting the icy slopes of the mountain itself. You’ll be watched over by peaks such as Kedarnath, Bhartekuntha, Bhrigupanth, Bhagirathi, Meru, and Shivling throughout the climb.

Technical Challenges

The nature of the mountain — its crevasse-riddled surface, complex glacier approach, high-angled snow slopes, patches of difficult ice and rock, technical knife ridges, constantly changing weather, high altitude, and strong winds — makes it a demanding climb.
Summit day starts early in the morning and the climb to the top takes around 10–12 hours.

Special Feature: Ski-Down Expedition
In recent years, ski-down expeditions on Kedar Dome have become quite famous. It is considered one of the best peaks in India to ski down from an elevation above 6,000m. The feasibility depends on snow cover, avoiding avalanche risk, and weather windows.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal climbing period is May–June and September–October, when weather is comparatively balanced. Be aware that the Himalayas can experience four seasons in a single day — always expect sudden weather changes.

Safety Notes
Comprehensive travel and climbing insurance is mandatory, covering high-altitude activities, emergency evacuation, and medical treatment. Acclimatize properly with multiple rotations above base camp before the summit push.
