Nandanvan Trek: A very beautiful meadow in the Garhwal Himalayas, located in Gangotri.
···—

Gangotri-Nandanvan trek is more than just a hiking trail; it’s a pilgrimage to the raw, unparalleled grandeur of the Indian Himalayas. Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, this trek offers a unique blend of spiritual depth and adventure. As you journey from the sacred bells of the Gangotri temple towards the serene, majestic presence of Mount Shivling, you realize this journey is not just about physical endurance – it’s about witnessing the birthplace of a civilization.

Spanning the Greater Himalayan Range, this trek takes you deep inside the Gangotri National Park. It leads you to the source of the holy Ganges River and eventually to the high-altitude meadows of Nandanvan, nestled at the base of the Bhagirathi mountain range.

View Mount Shivling

Standing at an altitude of 6,543 meters, Mount Shivling is often referred to as the “Matterhorn of India” due to its magnificent conical shape. From the meadows of Nandanvan, you get the best vantage point to witness this natural wonder. The view is so close that you can see the morning sun’s rays striking the snow-capped peaks, making the summit appear like a pyramid of molten gold. It’s a sight that has captivated mountaineers and sages for centuries.

Nandanvan serves as a base camp for several serious mountaineering expeditions. From your campsite, you are surrounded by the majestic Bhagirathi I, II, and III peaks. These three sister peaks stand like sentinels over the valley, offering a panoramic view that few other treks in Uttarakhand can match. The sheer granite walls of these peaks are a playground for the world’s top rock climbers, and seeing them up close is a highlight of this trek.

Bhojbasa through Pine and Deodar Forests

Starting from Gangotri, the trail enters Gangotri National Park. The initial section is a well-maintained path that winds through pine, deodar, and birch forests. As the name suggests, Bhojbasa was once famous for its vast birch forests, the bark of which was historically used to write ancient Indian scriptures. Along this route, keep an eye out for bharal (blue sheep), which are often seen grazing on the cliffs above the trail.

Crossing the Gangotri Glacier to Nandanvan (4,338m)

This is the most challenging and exciting part of the trek. After leaving the base camp at Bhojbasa, you trek towards Gaumukh and then begin the steep climb onto the lateral moraine of the glacier. This section involves large boulders, loose scree, and ice. Once you cross the glacier and ascend the final steep climb, the valley opens up to the emerald-green meadows of Nandanvan. The contrast between the gray, rocky glacier and the lush meadows is stunning and beautiful.

Technical Details and Difficulty Level

The Nandanvan trek requires a good level of physical and mental fitness for a safe and successful journey. This trek is not for complete beginners unless they are in excellent physical condition and accompanied by an experienced guide.

Itinerary

Explore to Gangotri

  • Begins with a sunrise departure from Rishikesh. This long but spectacular drive takes you through the heart of the mountains, passing through Uttarkashi, the apple orchards of Harsil, and the deep Bhairov Valley. You will climb from the plains to over 3,048 meters in a single day. Upon arrival in Gangotri, check into your hotel and head to the Gangotri Temple. Participating in the evening Ganga Aarti is the perfect way to seek blessings before venturing into the wilderness. The sound of the rushing river and the cold mountain air mark the true beginning of your adventure.
Start Trek Gangotri

  • After an early breakfast, you enter the Gangotri National Park. The trail is a gradual ascent along the right bank of the Bhagirathi River. You will first reach Chirbasa (the "home of pines"), where the valley opens up to reveal the massive Bhagirathi peaks. As you continue toward Bhojbasa, the trees disappear, replaced by the rugged "Arctic tundra" landscape. Bhojbasa is the last point of permanent shelter before the glacier. You will spend the night in tents, watching the sunset turn the granite peaks into glowing gold.
 The Trekking Trail

  • Today you trek to Gaumukh (4,048m), the physical source of the Ganges. The sight of the massive ice wall—the snout of the Gangotri Glacier—is a humbling experience. From Gaumukh, the trail becomes significantly steeper as you climb toward the high-altitude meadow of Tapovan. Tapovan is a spiritual sanctuary, famous for its emerald grass and crystal-clear streams. It sits directly at the base of Mount Shivling, offering a view so close you can hear the avalanches tumbling off the peak’s higher ridges.
Reach Nandanvan

  • This is the most technical and exhilarating day of the trek. To reach Nandanvan, you must cross the width of the Gangotri Glacier. This is an "unstable" landscape of moving moraine, huge boulders, and deep crevasses. There is no fixed path; you must follow the stone cairns left by previous explorers. Crossing the glacier requires immense focus and energy. Once you finish the steep climb on the other side, you emerge into the Nandanvan meadow, surrounded by the Bhagirathi peaks. This is the highest point of your journey and offers the most complete panoramic views of the entire range.
Descend Day

  • After a morning spent exploring the high ridges of Nandanvan and photographing the sun rising over Shivling and Meru, you begin your descent. You will re-cross the Gangotri Glacier, which requires just as much care on the way back. The descent from the high meadows back down to the "tundra" of Bhojbasa is faster but can be taxing on the knees. Returning to the lower altitude of 3,768m will make you feel more energetic as the oxygen levels begin to increase.
Descend Gangotri

  • The final leg of your trekking journey takes you back through the familiar path of Chirbasa to the town of Gangotri. Walking downhill, you can fully appreciate the change in vegetation as you move from the rocky heights back into the pine and deodar forests. Arriving in Gangotri, you will have a chance to visit the market, enjoy a hot meal, and perhaps visit the temple one last time to offer thanks.
Departure Day

  • Final day involves the long drive back down to Rishikesh. As you descend the winding mountain roads, you will see the landscape shift from the high-alpine peaks back to the lush green foothills. You will arrive in Rishikesh by late afternoon or evening, marking the end of a 7-day odyssey that took you from the plains to the literal source of life for millions. You return with a sense of achievement and a deep connection to the spirit of the Himalayas.
