Gartang Gali – A Historic & Thrilling Himalayan Skywalk near Gangotri
···—

Gartang Gali is one of the most thrilling and exciting treks in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. This historic wooden skywalk, reopened for tourists in 2021 after remaining closed for 59 years, is located in the breathtaking Nelong Valley, close to the India–China border.

Dating back nearly 150 years, Gartang Gali is a 136-metre-long wooden staircase carved into a vertical granite rock face. It is believed that this architectural marvel was built by Peshawari Pathans, who skillfully cut the rock to create this narrow route. Historically, Gartang Gali served as an important Indo-Tibetan trade route, used by merchants traveling between India and Tibet. However, the structure fell into disrepair after the Indo-China war of 1962, when the route was declared unusable.

A Walk Above the Nelong Valley

The bridge is about 1.8 metres wide and stands at an altitude of approximately 3,352 meters (11,000 ft). Rebuilt with great effort, Gartang Gali challenges even seasoned adventure seekers. Hanging dramatically from a rocky ledge, it offers jaw-dropping views of the Nelong Valley, surrounding Himalayan peaks, and rich flora and fauna. Far below, the Jadh Ganga River flows down to merge with the holy Ganges.

Reaching Gartang Gali involves an easy 2.5 km trek through dense forests, making it accessible for most travelers. Interestingly, the moment you begin climbing the wooden stairs, all fatigue and tension fade away, replaced by awe and excitement.

Historical & Cultural Significance

It is believed that the famous Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, author of “Seven Years in Tibet”, used this very route to escape from India to Tibet during World War II. His incredible journey later inspired the Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt, adding a fascinating historical dimension to the trek.

Gartang Gali lies close to the sacred Gangotri Temple, one of the four Char Dham shrines. Therefore, a visit here perfectly blends adventure, history, and spirituality, making it suitable for explorers, families, and culture enthusiasts alike.
